Description

Overall Job Summary:
The Research Scientist will be responsible for directing a research program focused on addressing Research and Development (R&D) departmental goals.  This includes both laboratory-based research and the management of collaborative external research projects.  Laboratory-based research will involve executing independent research projects and coordinating with the Laboratory Manager on diverse projects.  The focus of these efforts will related to identifying potential animal vaccine candidates/targets, producing and purifying key antigens from diverse prokaryotic organisms, and developing analytical assays required for licensing and commercialization efforts.  It is expected that the Research Scientist will provide professional opinions and assessments regarding new technologies and potential partnerships.  Lastly, the Research Scientist will be an essential component in the research and development of animal vaccines from scale-up to commercial licensure, and will be responsible for collaborating with Production, Quality Control, and Regulatory departments in order to achieve Bioniche Life Sciences Inc. corporate goals.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Execute an independent research program using microbiological and molecular biology-based technologies to meet the Research team’s priorities
  • Use microbiological and molecular biology-based technologies to support the needs and directions of the Development team
  • Use microbiological and molecular biology expertise to identify unique or new strategies for advancing R&D project progress
  • Devise, create, select, evaluate, report and optimize constructs and vectors for the purpose of producing recombinant proteins or molecules in support of department activities
  • Use specialized knowledge and individual experience to aid in decisions relating to vaccine technology development and commercialization efforts
  • Establish timelines and budgets for internal and external research projects
  • Manage outsourced molecular work as required for Research and Development programs.
  • Contribute positively to both the Research and Development teams in terms of communication, research, and future direction

Education, Work Experience & Competencies

  • Minimum M.Sc., Ph.D. in molecular biology, microbiology, applied microbiology or related field
  • Demonstrated research skills in academia or industry
  • Work experience in animal health, food safety or related fields preferred
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team using above average communication skills, both oral and written
  • Must have knowledge of current molecular biology techniques 
  • Above average organizational skills and documentation practices with a high degree of attention to detail

Working Conditions:

  • Extensive microbiology lab work
  • Exposure to heat, noise, and smells
  • Sitting and standing for long periods of time may be required
